A Guide to Pricing & What to Expect
Are you planning a birthday or celebration? One of the most common questions I get asked is, “How much do your cakes cost?”
The truth is, it depends! The price of a cake is so much more than just the cost of the ingredients and a few pounds for labour—it is about craftsmanship, premium ingredients, and the time spent creating something special and truly unique for your celebration.
Whether you’re after a simple, elegant design or a showstopper centrepiece, this guide will help you understand what goes into creating a bespoke birthday cake.
What Affects the Price of a Bespoke Birthday Cake?
Size – When you first enquire about a cake design, it is good to have an idea of the number of portions you require. A cake maker needs this information to suggest the best size for your requirements, and this also plays a part in the cake design.
Flavours & Fillings – Classic flavours, such as a traditional vanilla sponge or a zesty lemon drizzle, are included in the basic cake price. More gourmet combinations, like pistachio, champagne, or cakes using fresh fruit fillings, require premium ingredients and will be priced accordingly.
Design Complexity – When providing your cake maker with inspiration or a design theme, the level of complexity will be a major factor in pricing. More intricate designs require additional time, skill, and materials.
Personalisation & Decorations – Anything that requires personalisation, from specific colour shades to handcrafted sugar models or images, adds to the cost. Not everything is available pre-made; handcrafted elements take time and expertise.
Dietary Requirements – Vegan, gluten-free, and allergy-friendly cakes require specialised ingredients and preparation methods, which can impact the price.
How Much Do Cakes Cost by Size?
Custom cakes are priced individually to include all aspects of production, from consultation and design sketches to premium ingredients and skilled craftsmanship.
Handpainted images & custom made figures are more time consuming to create than using toys or printed edible images, and therefor will have an impact on the design price.

Cupcakes are also a great option! They can enhance a table display alongside a smaller cake, providing extra portions and an additional flavour choice.
Custom vs. Supermarket Cakes: What's the Difference?
This question comes up a lot, and while supermarket cakes have their place, a bespoke cake offers something truly special.
If you need a simple cake to pop into a party bag, a supermarket option is budget-friendly and convenient. However, these cakes often contain preservatives and artificial flavours. Bespoke cakes, on the other hand, are made fresh to order using quality ingredients, ensuring they taste just as good as they look.
A supermarket cake may have limited design choices, while a custom cake is tailored exactly to your theme, colours, and flavour preferences. Even a simple bespoke cake gives you control over every detail—size, flavour, and decorative elements—creating something truly unique for your celebration.
How Designs & Decorations Affect Price
Your final cake price depends on many factors, but one of the biggest is the level of detail required.
For example, a simple buttercream-covered sponge with a few decorations will always be more affordable than a sculpted 3D cake.
A 3D sculpted cake requires an internal frame built specifically for the cake, before even beginning the baking process. This level of craftsmanship takes far more time than a traditionally shaped cake.
Skilled techniques like sugar flower artistry, hand-painting, or airbrushing take years of training to perfect. Similarly, hand-crafted figures require a wire armature to ensure they hold their shape, with intricate details that make them truly lifelike.
Even something as simple as mixing a specific fondant colour can take 30 minutes or more, ensuring there’s enough for the entire cake. These little details all contribute to the final cost.
Do Flavours & Fillings Affect the Price?
Yes! While classic flavours like vanilla, chocolate, and lemon are included as standard, more gourmet options will increase the cost.
Flavours like pistachio, cherry & almond, or rich rum-soaked fruit cake require premium ingredients and a more intricate baking process. Seasonal ingredients and economic factors, such as the rising cost of cocoa, can also impact pricing.
Specialty Cakes: Pricing for Dietary Requirements
Gluten-free, dairy-free, and allergy-friendly cakes require special ingredients and additional preparation time to avoid cross-contamination. This extra care and the higher cost of specialised ingredients contribute to the final price.
How Far in Advance Should I Order?
It’s always best to book as early as possible. Last-minute orders can sometimes be accommodated, but they may be more expensive due to:
- Express delivery costs for custom toppers or ingredients
- Additional trips for supplies
- Working outside of regular hours to complete the order
Planning ahead ensures you secure your preferred date and avoid extra fees.
Hidden Costs & Extras to Consider
Delivery – If you need delivery, mention this when getting a quote. Cake makers often work alone, so delivering a cake means extra time away from the kitchen. My delivery fee covers the return journey from my premises to the venue.
Cake Display – If you want your cake to be a centrepiece, consider hiring a stand or additional styling elements like balloons or flowers to enhance the presentation.
How to Get the Best Value for Your Money
Think about when and how your cake will be served. If it’s a sit-down meal, guests may only want a small portion. If it’s a lively party, people may not focus on dessert at all. Ordering a smaller cake to avoid leftovers can be a smart choice.
Not everyone eats cake, so consider your guest list before ordering a large cake just for the sake of it. Prioritise your budget based on what’s most important—wow-factor design or extra portions.
Final Thoughts: What’s the Right Cake for Your Budget?
When choosing a cake for your birthday or celebration, think about your budget, how many portions you need, and how much of a statement you want to make.
One of the best ways to ensure your cake is designed to suit your needs is to provide an idea of your budget. Many clients hesitate to share their budget, possibly because they feel they might be charged the maximum amount they state. But that’s not the case! Knowing your budget helps me suggest the best design options for you, ensuring you get the best value for your money without any surprises.
I can offer options that work within your price range, whether that means simplifying certain elements or making small adjustments that still result in a stunning cake. Open discussions about budget mean I can tailor your cake perfectly while saving both of us time.
