How To Choose Your Perfect Wedding Cake Designer

Choosing a cake designer is all about finding the right fit for you. Your wedding is a one-of-a-kind event, and your cake should reflect your style and vision. That’s why I’ve developed a simple, stress-free process. So in this blog, I would like to share with you my design process, which you can use to help guide you through creating your dream cake, who ever you choose to.

Here’s how it works:

Step One: Your Vision

Don’t worry if you don’t have an exact picture of the cake you want – that’s what I’m here for! What really helps is having a clear idea of your overall wedding vision. Maybe you’ve already booked your venue, chosen a colour palette, or picked out flowers. All of these details help me create a cake that fits perfectly with the vibe of your big day. I absolutely love the detail, you never know what little element might spark a big idea!

You know what you love (and what you don’t!), and that’s so important, and I want you to share those loves and hates. Whether you’re planning an elegant manor house wedding, a cosy barn celebration, or a beachside soirée, all these elements come together to inspire your cake design. Here in Cornwall, we are spoilt with the range of venue styles, they all have their own unique thing, be it the architecture of a manor house, the rustic style of a barn or the simply stunning coastal views, I couldn’t possibly choose my favourite! But, together we’ll take your ideas and make them something beautiful – just for you.

Step Two: Getting to Know You and Your Wedding

Once you’ve shared your ideas with me, it’s my job to bring them to life. The more I know about your wedding – the venue, your colour scheme, flowers, and any fun personal touches (like pets, hobbies, or shared passions) – the better I can create a design that feels uniquely you.

My goal is to design a cake that’s personal, not just a copy of something you’ve seen online. It’s so much more fun and meaningful to create something that reflects your personality, and it makes your cake truly stand out.

A great cake designer will also offer suggestions on cake size, decorations, and any fun details you want to include. And don’t worry – there’s no such thing as “too traditional” or “too out there” when it comes to your cake. If you can dream it, we can create it!

Step Three: Finding the Perfect Designer for You

It’s important to feel confident in your choice of cake designer. You can start by doing a little research. Look online at portfolios and social media galleries to get a feel for different designers’ styles. Make sure you resonate with their work and can picture their cakes at your wedding. A great way to begin is to create a mood board or save designs you love.

‘Pinterest’ is a great visual platform for researching ideas, you can even share boards you create to explain your wedding day vision with your wedding suppliers.

Personal recommendations are also a great way to find your designer. Ask friends or family members who have recently gotten married if they loved their cake designer, chances are you might’ve been a guest and tasted the cake as well. Or, check with your venue to see if they have a list of trusted suppliers. These suppliers will also be really familiar with the venue, and know the vibe they can create. They will also have images of real wedding cake displays at your venue, to help you envisage display design ideas.

No matter how you find your potential designer, make sure to do your homework – explore their website and reviews to ensure their style matches your vision.

Step Four: Consultation & Cake Tasting – The Fun Part!

Once you’ve found a designer you’re excited about (hopefully me!), the next step is to set up a consultation and tasting. This is one of the best parts of the whole process. You’ll get to share your ideas and vision, and we’ll chat about all the details that will make your cake special.

We’ll also talk about flavours, and you’ll have had the chance to taste some delicious samples. I offer a sample box service that lets you enjoy the flavours at home with your loved ones – no pressure, just an honest and fun experience!

During this stage, we’ll also discuss your budget. It’s a big part of the planning process, and I’ll work with you to make sure the cake fits within your price range while still being beautiful and delicious.

Step Five: Finalising the Details

By now, we’ve discussed your vision, flavours, and budget, and it’s time to finalise the details. I’ll help you decide on the perfect portion sizes, tiers, and decorations that align with your budget while ensuring every slice is as stunning as the last.

One thing I always prioritise is quality – the inside of the cake is just as important as the outside! I use the same high-quality ingredients and trusted recipes for every wedding cake I make. The decoration is where we can adjust costs depending on the level of detail you’re after.

Delivery is another important part of the process. I personally deliver and set up all my wedding cakes, my trusty tool kit on hand to ensure everything looks flawless when it arrives at your venue. I will liaise directly with your venue to organise the delivery & set up, one less thing for you to do. There are no hidden fees or last-minute surprises – it’s all part of the service.
